First subject debate. Congresswomen Ilhan Omar’s use of the Quran during her swearing-in ceremony to the House of Representatives.
Congresswomen Omar swore into the house using a Andrew Jackson’s personal Quran. This action had wide controversy amongst the American People. The more conservative side believing that the United States is one nation under God, and therefore should be kept in tradition with swearing-in on the Bible. And the more liberal side applauding Omar for diversifying congress, believing in separation of church and state, and also believing it necessary to maintain freedom of religion. Whether or not she should have done this is up for debate, but it’s not what I want to focus our attention to. I want to pull your attention the Quran, more specially, Andrew Jackson’s Quran. Omar believed this would be a good sign that the Muslim religion can coincide with American society. She believed that it would be a sign of good faith, to show the American people that one of our most famous Presidents had a Quran in order to accept the Muslim religion and learn about the Muslim people. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. This is why Americans need to be more educated about their history. Andrew Jackson did have a Quran, and he did read it to learn about the Muslim people, but it wasn’t for peaceful purposes. Andrew Jackson possessed that Quran in order to learn his enemy. This is one of the most basic arts of war, in order to defeat your enemy, you must first understand them. During Jackson’s time as a congressman, the United States was engaged in a war with the Barbary States of North Africa. These States were ruled by a Muslim doctrine. Jackson wanted to learn his enemy so he could defeat them. The U.S. would end the war victorious by using the United States Marine Corp for the first time in their history. The battle between the Barbary States and The USMC would be solidified in the USMC fight song ” From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli”. This became the stepping stone for the USMC. Omar didn’t know this, that the Quran that she was swearing to, was used against her religion. If she would have known this, I think she would have wanted to use a different Quran. In my opinion, she should have used her Quran, not Andrew Jackson’s
